Private Letter to the Indigenous Nations and Communities

07/06/2024:

Whereas past experiences shape our perceptions and can sometimes lead to delays in extending gestures of respect and friendship, it is acknowledged that our presence here is not intended to claim or take from these lands. Instead, we are here to learn from and honor them during our temporary stay.

To the indigenous communities and nations, including the Chumash, Kawaiisu, Tübatulabal, Tejon, Yokuts, and their descendants, of the lands upon which I currently, albeit temporarily, inhabit:

I extend my deepest gratitude for welcoming me into these sacred lands. My time here has deepened my connection to my indigenous heritage and affirmed my identity as Chief Mathias El, born in Detroit, Michigan. As a California Indian, I proudly serve the Mathias El Tribe, rooted in the wisdom passed down by my ancestors.

My family’s journey spans Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Florida, where my grandparents, Alabama Indians of Choctaw and Creek heritage, instilled in me a profound respect for our cultural traditions. In 2004, I ventured to California alone, as an inhabitant situated in Bakersfield, our land known as the State of Mathias El, which serves as our government’s seat.

Growing up, I navigated labels of Black and African-American before embracing my true identity as an Indigenous American. This journey was marked by overcoming historical and systemic pressures that obscured our heritage in Detroit. The Mathias El Tribe stands as a beacon for those still seeking their cultural roots, advocating fiercely against identity erasure.

Your warm embrace and shared cultural heritage have deeply influenced me, fostering unity and mutual respect. I recognize the stewardship of these lands by your communities, honoring the traditions and ancestors who have safeguarded them for generations.

This Treaty of Peace and Friendship marks a new beginning focused on collaboration and mutual growth. As guests on sacred lands, we approach with humility and reverence, understanding the temporary nature of our presence. Through positive interactions with neighbors, we aim to contribute positively as we embrace and enrich our shared space in history.

With deep respect and sincerity,

Mathias

Chief of the Mathias El Tribe
